Resume Tips and Techniques
During Resume Tips & Techniques, an event co-sponsored by Women in Film & Video, an experienced and savvy panel led us through new ways to update and reshape our resumes for today’s industry.
Recruiters Karen Proctor (Kreative Recruiting) and Ken Nice (the YOH Company) provided key tips for composing the best resume possible—use bullet points, concise job descriptions and strong verbs, and be sure to highlight your skills. Meanwhile, consultant Elizabeth Ventura (EMV Enterprises) gave some pointers on creating a skills-based resume and photographer Katarina Price (Katarina Price Photography) noted that these days, “first impressions are made online.” She recommended getting a good head shot at least for your LinkedIn profile–selfies don’t count!
Conflict in Style
How do you handle conflict? Are you an avoider? Maybe a compromiser? WICT members braved a thunderstorm to attend the Conflict in Style workshop. Mary Abbajay of Careerstone Group led an in-depth discussion (and even some role play!) on how to handle conflict in the workplace. The group discovered their personal conflict styles and how they can handle situations better in the future. Mary noted that relationships are weighed down by negative attitudes and fixed opinions. When things come to a head, it is best to tackle the conflict earlier, as it will be easier to resolve than at a later point, and that you should provide constructive and usable feedback about the conflict, disentangling impact from intent–which is also a key leadership skill!
Real Men Join WICT!
(From Will Martinez of the New Mexico & Arizona Chapter)
Today’s women are influential leaders as CEOs, political figures, fashionistas, athletes and of course, cable industry professionals. At its core, WICT brings together those of us who believe in the strength and equality of women. The organization celebrates strong leadership, provides the opportunity to advance in your career and participate in a welcoming atmosphere with valuable resources. I must admit, when I was new to the industry I was a little skeptical about joining solely based on the name. I thought, “Where can I join MICT – Men in Cable Telecom?” Forget about googling it; there’s no such thing! At my first mixer, I was introduced to veterans in the industry (both men and women) that shared their stories and excitement about WICT. I immediately felt part of the organization and made good relationships after attending a few events. I have also learned so much more about the industry and its changes, as well as more about myself as a professional through its resources (webinars, board participation, etc.). It’s important to have equal representation in this organization and show our support for women to continue climbing the corporate ladder. REAL (Rewarding Equality and Leadership) Men support the leadership of women and join WICT!
